Grüne Welten: Choreographies of Life within Berlin’s Green Network, is a 3-month research period (Septemberl 1, 2020 - November 30, 2020) of intellectual and artistic discovery, exchange, experimentation, and production focusing on the conceptual ideas, topographical forms, and living human and nonhuman bodies present within Berlin’s vast and diverse park system. Using a choreographic methodology developed during my practice-informed PhD dissertation I intend to produce an hour-long performance work based on the material forms and human and nonhuman life within Berlin’s parks that is complemented by critical writing about Berlin’s nature-cultures. The choreography is intended to be a kinetic visualization of multiple living bodies’ negotiation of the designs embedded within all parkland topographies that embody particular conceptual orientations towards life. The critical writing is intended to use the research, creation, and production of the choreographic work to reflect on the ongoing dialogue between persisting historical forms and existing human and nonhuman bodies and the processes through which places and living beings adapt, and are adapted, to one another. The project is inspired and informed by numerous publications on Berlin’s history and urban landscapes including Brian Ladd’s The Ghosts of Berlin: Confronting German History in the Urban Landscape (1997), and Henrik Ernstson and Sverker Sörlin’s Grounding Urban Nature’s: Histories and Futures of Urban Ecologies (2019). Grüne Welten will be hosted by the Hochschulübergreifendes Zentrum Tanz Berlin (HZT), a hub for contemporary dance and experimental choreographic creation, and supervised by choreographer and experimental artist, Professor Nik Haffner, director of the HZT.
